I have gotten no response at all since I posted. Can someone tell me what 
I'm doing wrong (if anything)? Does the resize command work? I really need 
a clue to get started.

No Implementation: This ext2 filesystem has a rather strange layout! Parted
can't resize this (yet).

I ran dumpe2fs and came up with these:
has_journal filetype needs_recovery sparse_super

Do I need to shut these off?  Or does this version of parted not work on 
resizing ext2? Also, I tried it with journaling turned off.
