from a shell script, executing
        { make check 2>&1; echo "rc=$?" } | tee -a make.log

Agreed, but I certainly don't want /usr/bin/disk and /usr/bin/label without
any documentation.  Moreover these two programs just run some test.

I repeat: they must not be installed.
