I think this is a bug, but it may just be my
misunderstanding of how the options should work.
If I create a tar file of a directory's contents using
the following command:
tar -cvf file.tar directory/*
I'll get a tar file called file.tar and it will
contain the contents of directory. However, the first
file in directory (as displayed by ls) will be
corrupted. It will become the concatenation of all
other files in directory. This corrupted file is both
in the file.tar file and on the filesystem in
directory. If the "v" option is ommitted from the
command word/bundled options, the bug does not present
itself.
I have encountered this problem using
tar (GNU tar) 1.13.25
on OS X 10.3.8 (Darwin 7.8.0)
Please let me know if there are any additional details
I can provide on this potential bug.
Thanks,
Jay Eckles
