Yes. However, I was wrong in my initial 2GB
statement; the problem appears for files > 4GB. I've
changed the subject line to reflect this.
Files that don't fail:
5.1G zero.big ### filled from /dev/zero
2.4G n2.big ### filled with '2'
2.5G random2.bigfile ### filled from /dev/urandom
Files that fail:
5.0G random3.bigfile ### filled from /dev/urandom
4.9G n1.big ### filled with '1'
5.5G num.big ### filled with '1', '2', etc.
Also: The problem does not occur on an amd64 box.
