I have the same issue with tar 1.22.90 under SuSE Linux 11.2 x86_64 with no special option used:

 

obelix:~/devel/autoopt # tar cf ../autoopt.tar .

obelix:~/devel/autoopt # tar tvf ../autoopt.tar

drwxr-xr-x root/root         0 2010-02-26 08:06 ./

-rw-r--r-- root/root     21609 2010-02-26 00:00 ./Makefile.in

-rw-r--r-- root/root      1136 2010-02-26 08:05 ./getopt.in~

tar: rmtlseek not stopped at a record boundary
