This sounds like a very good suggestion.  But I assume that it would
apply only to pax format?  That would limit its utility.

Perhaps we could use it with USTAR format too?  We could use the
bytes after the first NUL in the linkname field, say.  Long linknames
wouldn't get the protection but that's a relatively minor problem.

Also, there is the little matter of who will code up this suggestion....
