The most recent proposal of xattrs support is in this thread:

There are xattr/ACLs/SELinux/documentation patches in the first message
(plus 2 allowing tar to build -- including untouched xattrat() gnulib
proposal).

The first message is followed by two more -- those messages contain
incremental fixes.
