Thanks a lot for such a detailed report and for the patch.  You are
right, that certainly qualifies as a bug.  I'm going to push your
patch to the git head.  Regarding your questions:

Yes, they are.

>   Is it save to assume the resulting archive is a valid archive

Yes, of course.  The resulting archive will be a valid tar archive.

> - Should the modified behaviour only be enabled by a command

I don't think so.  It is a bugfix, and as such it should rather be
the default behavior.
