Right.  And so if we go with Stephen's suggestion, I'd say we need to
make @example compute that parameter automatically to fit the line, if
the font used now for @example doesn't make it fit.  Then allow the
user to specify a parameter to override the font derived from that.

After all, I'd be surprised to hear that some authors deliberately
wants their @example lines to overflow the line length.

Something like that.  You might even lift all limits altogether: if
they want ugly print-out, let them have it.
