problems with modern texinfo.tex

From: Simon Josefsson
Subject: problems with modern texinfo.tex
Date: Wed, 18 Aug 2004 13:29:04 +0200

Hello. With the texinfo.texi that comes with automake 1.9, building
dvi/ps fail:

/usr/bin/texi2dvi: etex exited with bad status, quitting.
/usr/bin/texi2dvi: see gnutls.log for errors.

gnutls.log is rather long, but I'm guessing this is what causes the
error:

./version.texi:15: Missing control sequence inserted
Please don't say `\def cs{...}', say `\def\cs{...}'.
I've inserted an inaccessible control sequence so that your
definition will be completed without mixing me up too badly.
You can recover graciously from this error, if you're
careful; see exercise 27.2 in The TeXbook.

I don't understand the line number, version.texi only have four lines:

@set UPDATED 15 August 2004
@set UPDATED-MONTH August 2004
@set EDITION 1.1.17
@set VERSION 1.1.17

I'm attaching gnutls.log since you are probably better at parsing it
than me...

I tried copying texinfo.tex from gnulib/config/, but same problem.

Reverting to texinfo.tex in automake 1.8,
\texinfoversion{2004-05-16.08}, work fine.

Thanks.
