btw, I've decided to go for the following:

*) python/gnome based GUI (PyGnome+libglade), which I will maintain myself
   (python should provide for rapid development cycles)

*) java GUI -- if anyone volunteers... I won't maintain that one myself,
   but will provide for hosting if required.

*) whatever GUIs people may come up with... if someone wants to create a
   VisualBasic GUI, I won't oppose... but focusing on 2 GUIs instead of
   2+n would be wiser...
