I try out wget (& other software) on OS X & multiple operating systems.
no problems compiling wget 1.17.1 on OS X.
homebrew ( https://github.com/Homebrew/homebrew ) makes installing or
compiling wget & it's dependencies, like pkg-config in this case, easy
on OS X. it's a package manager so it's easy to stay on top of newly
released software too.
that may be too heavy if all someone wants is wget, but it's way
easier for non developers.
