Could you please do the following?

* Remove (or rename) ~/.xboardrc, start xboard with the -debug flag, and reproduce the problem. Send us the xboard.debug file that is created. Also send the ~/.xboardrc file that gets created.

* Do "xlsfonts > xlsfonts.txt" and send us the xlsfonts.txt file.

* Do "locale > locale.txt" and send us the locale.txt file.

* Put back your ~/.xboardrc file that you manually edited, start xboard with the -debug flag, and confirm that you don't see the problem. Send us that ~/.xboardrc file and the xboard.debug file that is created. Be sure to label the two .xboardrc and xboard.debug files so that we don't get confused about which is which.

i tried the new version from git, still can not create font set. the error
message is more verbose now. it's about failing to match helvetica.

anyway, if i specify manually in ~/.xboardrc, i can start xboard. the
difference is this time, the *'s are not all filled out in the saved
~/.xboardrc file. for instance, the iso8859 part is not set, it remains *.

i thought maybe this is just a font problem on my machine. :P
