 Thanks, Peter. The C fallback should/must work in any case! When an arch
 is not detected as suitable, `config-guess.sh` is intended to output
 nothing. A later
 `ifdef ARCH ...` in `defaults.make` should normally get this (the make
 docs say ifdef triggers when the variable is not empty). What exactly does
 it mean that it "isn't working correctly"?
