 The behaviour must have changed in Chicken.  I had it running fine on an
 older chicken, with the latest http and spiffy.  I updated chicken and it
 started behaving weird on my machine too.  I didn't write down which
 Chicken I had before, though :(  I think one with the old build system,
 because it didn't work on amd64 for a while.  Currently I am running
 2.711.

 This does not happen in the tests, only in "real" situations, afaik.
 Mystifying!
