Building GNU Classpath 0.08 for 64-bit PowerPC

It looks as if the CFLAGS handling in Classpath 0.08's configure script
was broken.  I configured it with:

And the CFLAGS did indeed get recorded, according to config.status:

But when I actually look at the value of CFLAGS set in the Makefiles,
it is nothing of the sort:

This problem does not happen with the Classpath CVS Head.

I am mentioning it here on the list because it caused me some
wasted time today when I was trying to debug a problem a user has
been having with Classpath 0.08 on Linux/ppc64.  On that platform,
in order to make 64-bit binaries, I absolutely must give the -m64
flag to GCC, and this does not appear possible to do just by
manipulating configure's CFLAGS variable.

I did manage to do this by giving Classpath 0.08's configure script
the additional argument:  CC="gcc -m64 -mcpu=power4", but that was
the only way I found to make it work.

I'm mentioning this here since Jikes RVM currently recommends
Classpath 0.08, and I wanted to save folks some frustration if
trying to build with Classpath 0.08 on that platform.

There is another bug as well with Double.toString() on that platform,
at least under Yellow Dog Linux.  It is fixed with the attached patch
to Classpath 0.08.  I have a similar fix for Classpath CVS head
(CVS head also works with Jikes RVM, by the way) and will commit it
shortly.

Patch for the classpath-0.08 distribution.
This patch adds a SIZEOF_VOID_P item to include/config.h; that, in turn,
means that Double.toString() should work correctly again on 64-bit PowerPC.

To apply it:
 Save this file as classpath-0.08-sizeof-void-p.patch
 $  tar xzf classpath-0.08.tar.gz
 $  patch -d classpath-0.08 -p1 < classpath-0.08-sizeof-void-p.patch
