Unless they are hiding all the interesting stuff on their webpage,
rake doesn't do any of the checksum build signatures that came from
cons.  The syntax looks nice so I have considered working underneath
and adding the plumbing I put in cons that allow redundant builds to
be truncated early or add con's derived object caching.

True, I don't think rake's goals were as lofty as cons/scons. I use rake mainly for automating repetitive tasks for my project and less as a "build tool". Since all my programming is in ruby these days, I don't really build anything anymore. Rake let's me do simple automation using my favorite language: ruby!
