By the way, coreutils added the base64 utility in coreutils 6.0 in 2006,
after the creation of RFC 4648, and corresponding additions to gnulib to
make the use of base64 easier to code.

Pursuing an RFC standardization of base58 (perhaps as a successor to
4648 that includes more encodings) might be an appropriate first step.
