[Denemo-devel] hum on the mic input

I reported a while back that I got excellent note detection in Denemo
using the headphones output of a small electronic keyboard plugged
directly into the mic input of the soundcard.
Yesterday I tried it and it started picking up random noise. I had
noticed that there was a lot of mains hum in the output, but it didn't
seem to be mattering before. I seem to remember that this sort of hum
can be got rid of by connecting all the earths together, or avoiding
having anything earthed in the first place.
Does anyone have any experience with putting signals into computer
soundcards? I read up on microphones and learned that the regular
studio/stage microphones do not produce enough signal - a pre-amp is
needed, so I am thinking of getting a small mixer. Again, I have no idea
what would be good enough and what would be overkill.
Another route I would like to explore is direct midi input (the small
keyboard I have Yamaha SHS-10 has a midi out), but the only devices I
see are midi to usb, and have windows drivers...
Any comments from those in the know would be much appreciated.
Richard
