I found a font with musical signs that said "free" and modified it for
denemo.

My guess is that the person who wrote that did not have any specialist
knowledge about licences, I think you can choose any reasonable
interpretation of the words.

I am happy to license my work on denemo.ttf under any licence that
allows work on denemo to proceed without hindrance. The work has no
wider importance anyway. Jeremiah Benham (IIRC) also modified that font.
