The reason deemphasis sounded bad was that it was bad.... I had left
out the decimation ratio (a factor of 50) in the time constant. It
works great now.
It would be nice to be able to change the frequency of the Complex
downconverter once things have started.
The new IIR filters work now, after several hours of my first experience
with gdb and ddd (which didn't help, BTW).
