 I managed to do this and had a play with the experimental circuit
tonight. I will need to build an IF amp as I suspected but when I tuned
the AOR3000 to a very very strong signal then I could see a 20mv p to p
signal on the I & Q out lines of the RF2711. When I tuned to a strong
1200 baud data signal I could see some some nice sine waves on my o'scope
when looking at the I & Q lines so at least I know the circuit is working.

 Now its time to order up some parts and design the IF amp and I & Q
filtering and amplification circuit.
