A friend reports that some of the motherboard sound chips have a
configuration bit that turns the low pass filter on or off. I don't
know whether your chip does, or whether your driver supports this bit,
but these seem like good things to check into. Look at the include
file that describes the chip's registers, and/or find its data sheet
online by finding the manufacturer's logo and part number on the
physical chip, going to their web site, and searching for the part
number.
