I've found that if you started-out using build-gnuradio, you can continue to use it ad-infinitum, without having to uninstall between.

That should be true when you are using a particular version, but it's probably a good idea to uninstall gnuradio between versions. Most of the time, things will change such that you'll have extra stuff laying around that is no longer used. So it's harmless and won't affect anything.
