Rich,
I started down that path, ran into trouble (VOLK needed Cheetah or
similar, etc.) and got some advice to follow the pybombs route, which
generated its own trouble.

Academically, of course, I think it would be great to iron out the
Windows issues. As I said, if there are suggestions I'd be willing to
try, but I am concerned that my employer may tire of my not making
progress!

I have an old XP laptop (that I'd like to keep native since it has a
real comm port) and a newer Vista-era laptop (updated to Win 7) that
has no real function any more (daughter's machine, replaced for
college with a Mac)
So perhaps I'll repurpose the newer machine as a Linux box.
