Hi Sumit,

it's usually a lot easier having a virtual machine where everything is
recent than having to build a recent version of boost, tell UHD (and in
effect, the applications that will later use UHD) to link against that,
carry the .so around and configure your system to runtime-load that
version of boost when running UHD applications, and the system version
elsewhen. That's the worse kind of system management than having a
separate VM. I guess that's why Dennis proposed to make it easier for
you by using a virtual machine.

So, in fact, there's a tool called pybombs, which tries to install every
dependency, and if it can't find one in a sufficient version, builds it
from source, puts everything in a prefix of its own and gives you a
shell script that sets up an environment where the libraries in that
prefix are loaded by default. That is very handy for development (it's
the way I work, even if I don't usually use pybombs), but from a
centralized system management point of view, this is a nightmare,
because every user has its own set of libraries installed somewhere.
It's kind of the opposite of the reason why people pay money for RHEL.

So, from a maintainability point of view, the virtualized OS might be
easier. Now, I'm usually no proponent of using UHD in virtual machines,
as high performance low latency communication with a SDR devices is
really not what VMs are usually optimized for, unless you really know
how to deal with your virtualizer.

I want to point one thing out here: You haven't mentioned that you want
to use a USRP. If you don't, you just don't need UHD. If you do, then
the network attached ones should be fine; if you want to attach one via
USB3, good luck, because RHEL 6.7 still has a 2.6.35 kernel, and I'm not
aware of how much of recent USB host device drivers they have been
backporting.

You'll probably be able to install all of GNU Radio Companion's
dependencies on RHEL6, but getting a lot of the more recent features of
GNU Radio to run on RHEL6 might require some backporting. That's not
going to be a lot of fun, so maybe you just want to start using GNU
Radio on a platform where everything works out of the box, and port
everything to RHEL6.7 as soon as you really have to.

Best regards,
Marcus
