Regarding ffcall: there haven't been any changes for a long time as I
perceive.
Maybe it would make sense from a "ease of use" point of view to add
ffcall to base and have it automatically compiled when no ff[i|call] lib
is found on the system.
(It's small and does not break anything as it does not change.)



A lot of projects include their own versions of external libraries, like
xine or mplayer. Compared to vlc, those two are much easier to build and
install.
The problem is of course the amount of maintainance that has to be done
to keep everything current and stable.
