Hi,
-art seems to be most complete and working backed, but it is treated as
'optional and not supported, so make it work it yourself'. It is unfair :)
To prevent font dificulties, would it be possible to include fonts in some
core-* package? I would suggest to include them (at least basic font set) in
core-gui or create (as i have proposed few monts ago) another gnustep-core
package called core-resources or something like that for all -gui resources.
Another option is to create separate -font backends for font handling. This can
be useful for general font management, including management of screen and
printer fonts, font substitution/matching, inlining non-standard fonts in
.ps/.pdf output... With this -font backends one can use both X and freetype
fonts for example, or Windows and free type fonts at the same time.
Another -art related issues are art dependencies. -art depends on lib-freetype
and libart. Presonaly i do not like the solution of including foreign libs in
another project, but if they are included at least in distributed packages it
will make installation much easier.
Moreover, some systems are starting to use newer version of freetype which does
not work well without patching back-art (some does not even with patches). Is
it possible to fix it?
What do you think?

If you're using back-art, you have to create your own fonts using the makenfont
tool, or download nfonts that are already floating around
out there on the web. They go in /usr/GNUstep/System/Library/Fonts/.
back- art will not use X's fonts.
Yes, sorry, I forgot to mention that. You can put the fonts either in
../System/Library/Fonts/
or your user's
~/GNUstep/Library/Fonts/
Back-art will scan both directories.
I'm sure someone'll be around in a few minutes with an URL for nfonts.
http://wiki.gnustep.org/index.php/nfont%20packages
has some information on nfonts and links where to download fonts from.
