How to convert text to glyphs to append to bezier path??

I'm trying to plot text vertically, to label a graph axis.

How can I convert the NSString @"X axis" into the glyphs I need to
append to my affine transformed bezier path??  Is there a better way
to do this?  This needs to work without back-art if possible.
