Have you considered DocBook XML? It's pretty straight forward (at least when
compared to LaTeX and friends) and is finding widespread acceptance among
authors of technical documentation. Using FO you can make the stuff look good
on paper (through conversion to PDF). 

Pros:
* transparent format
* relatively easy to write in

Cons:
* no decent WYSIWYG editors (??)
* still looks like gibberish to unsophisticated users

BTW, the TOC looks promising. Mind if I help? I though this might also be
a good place to suck up by mentioning that I really appreciate the work your
doing on GORM - way to go dude!
