what do i need to do to get gnustep running and running at startup, when i turn on the computer.

You do not 'run' GNUstep.

First off, you should install GNUstep via /usr/ports/deve/gnustep -- it's a Meta port and will install all necessary packages belonging to GNUstep.

Next, take a look at
        /usr/local/etc/rc.d/GNUStep.sh
and
        /etc/local/etc/gdomap_if
and make sure they reflect your system configuration.
The latter should contain one line with your machine's IP and NETMASK.

Next, you will have to modify your user's
        $HOME/.xinitrc
and/or
        $HOME/.xsession
to source in
        /path/to/GNUstep/Makefile/GNUstep.[c]sh

Take a look at
        http://gnustep.made-it.com/BuildGuide/#AEN1308
to get an idea how it should look like.

Additionally, you might want to take a look at the Wiki at
        http://wiki.gnustep.org/
Especially
        http://wiki.gnustep.org/index.php/Platform:BSD
would be of interest to you.

Hope that helps,
