packet sniffing info

I'm trying to learn a bit more about the way internet traffic works  
on my machine to ultimately build a server/client app.

I want to start with being able to simply write simple packet  
sniffing tool and I'm not sure what GNUStep classes to use for the  
exercise.  Could someone provide a point in the right direction?
