That stuff comes from the third-party libgc package, so we don't really know 
much about how it works across AIX versions.

Since AIX isn't a highly used OS by the rank and file DotGNU'ers, anyone who 
has AIX is pretty much on their own.  We will of course accept patches to fix 
any problems that are found.  We just aren't in a position to find them 
ourselves or to document all of the versions that it does or does not work 
with.

I suppose this is a long-winded way of saying that in the absence of an AIX 
volunteer, you just became it. :-)
