ftp does accept the password in an environment variable:

duplicity /local/dir ftp://address@hidden/some_dir
(taken from "man duplicity" / http://duplicity.nongnu.org/duplicity.1.html)
(for ssh/scp backend, the option "--ssh-askpass" has to be passed. Or
use public-key auth)
