Currently, gnus keep track of the number of unread mail by using its .newrc, 
AFAIU.
While this is the only method for nntp, this it totally wrong with IMAP.

It'd be nice to have a way to at least configure that so it just asks to the
IMAP server how many new mails there is in the box, rather to trying
to count it itself.

This has been fixed in the new nnimap implementation.
