I checked GNOME, awesome, xfce4, OpenBox and all do not find the
fonts. I suppose this is an gtk(?) issue.

I am closing this bugreport as the fonts in Icecat are all visible and
selectable now.
jp.wikipedia.org has no problems and this page
http://www.alanwood.net/unicode/unicode_samples.html
used to be 95% unicode "boxes", now it displays 100% correcly (if you exclude
CJK Unified
Ideographs Extension B, C and some private Area stuff).
Most operating systems have a "post-install" hook which runs fc-cache and other
things.
I forget about this, to be reminded of things you used to do years ago is good.
Maybe I should just set a user-cronjob with this and forget about it again.
