It turns out gfontsel does provide a way to manually fill in the other
fields to make the font unique, but it suffers the same problem as the
custom-face interface in Emacs does; it does not give you any hints
about which values are valid (except on the "font information" tab, it
gives one example of a font that matches the currently selected pattern).

Since neither gfontsel nor xfontsel can FORCE the user to select a
unique font, I have decided to solve this externally, by popping up
a menu of the matching fonts when the font returned is not unique and
we need a single match.

But there is still some functionality that might be useful in
gfontsel; it would be nice to be able to populate the "Filter"
information from the command-line, to provide the same functionality
as xfontsel's "-pattern" argument. I have Cc'ed the gfontsel
maintainer so he sees this suggestion.

BTW, I don't see any option that gives OK and Cancel buttons instead
of Apply and Close in gfontsel (1.4.0). It mentions the two different
configurations in the manual, and the former seems more intuitive, but
I can only get the latter (which requires that you press Apply then
Close).
