I don't want to argue against background images since I simply don't
care about them at all, but note that the applications you have
in mind will have to deal with problems linked to the variable line
height, line wrapping, variable char width, ... and that those variable
values can be different for the same buffer but displayed in two
different windows.  So maybe a different approach than background
images will prove easier and more robust.
