    Any line in an @example that is longer than about 61 characters will 
    trigger overfull hbox in TeX.  Any line in @smallexample that is longer 
    than 64 characters will do the same.

The font used in @smallexample is considerably smaller than the one
for @example--I am sure the difference in capacity is more than just 3
characters.
