M-x set-keyboard-coding-system RET
and then select a coding-system like iso-2022 or utf-8 or ...
That did the trick. My code seems to work; it collapses all of those
bindings to one line. I will install it.
Running in a utf-8 locale should do the trick as well (under a tty of
course).
That was not an option for me, since I don't know the name of any
valid UTF-8 locale,
