cursor foreground color

Using gnu emacs 22.0.95.1 on sabayon (gentoo).

The cursor implementation is to rewrite the character
cell under the cursor substituting normal background
color as new foreground and the defined cursor color
as new background.

The cursor face is essentially a fiction. The only
property that seems to have any significance is the
background color.

I use a private implementation of cursor colors and
blinking. Starting with black text on a white my
cursor alternates between a light gray and a pastel.
The actual pastel varies according to properties of
the current buffer (much like cua's scheme).

My problem is that when emacs in rendering the cursor
substitutes my white background for my high contrast
black foreground it makes the character under the
cursor quite hard to see. And the effect of moving
the cursor using keyboard repetition is unattractive.

Is there any way to cause cursor display to leave the
foreground color intact?
