   I realise it's a bit off-topic, but just how do you
   set up a 48 line console?  I'd like to just use the
   console for Emacs more often, but getting just 24/25
   lines can be a real killer.

in /boot/grub/menu.lst, i see:

# kopt=root=/dev/hda2 ro vga=0x307

vga=0x307 results in 64 lines by 160 characters on a
1280x1024 pixel monitor.  see vsafb.txt for more info.
