I cannot reproduce this problem with MinGW GCC.  I don't see even a
single warning from the compiler.

Can it be that VC bails out after too many warnings?  If so, can you
use some compiler option to make it less noisy, i.e. lower the warning
threshold?  Or at least bump up the number of warnings that cause it
to give up (if I'm right and the sheer number of warnings causes the
failure)?
