    Well, these sort of operations are sufficiently obscure that one
    should add functions for them, I think.

There must be thousands of things that are meaningful and obscure, and
it would be a change for the worse to complicate Emacs by adding them
all.  We should only add the ones that are substantially useful.  The
question is whether this is one of them.


Is not this something that can affect new users? It looks so to me from the situation where it can show up.

The lack of this feature might make Emacs look even more difficult than it is for a new user. It might also actually makes it more difficult for them by drawing their attention to something that is not worth their attention.
