I tested in emacs -Q just now and have to say that it seems to work
well. I have previously had some problems with it like the region
suddenly being highlighted when I did not expect it to or commands not
working when the region was not highlighted. All of that seems to be
solved. For a new user I would guess having the region highlighted
when not expected is the most confusing and annoying thing, it kind of
feels like some sticky thing follows the cursor. If we have eliminated
all those "false positives" (I don't remember now when I got that
behavior) I think this will be a good default. More experienced users
can easily change the appropriate setting to get the behavior they
like.

I like it.
