The fringes are not always redrawn correctly when scrolling, leaving
behind traces of bitmaps that don't actually exist. That appears to
happen only when a font backend is used. To reproduce:
$ emacs -Q -fn 'bitstream vera sans mono-11'
M-x menu-bar-showhide-fringe-ind-mixed
C-x C-f lisp/loaddefs.el
C-v
The fringe now shows a down-arrow on the third line, which was
presumably copied there when the last two screen lines were moved to the
top.
