23.0.60; Startup produces "apply: wrong-type-argument, number-or-marker-p, nil"

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:

Starting with or without my init file, I get this error message, and the
*scratch* buffer starts in fundamental-mode.  No desktop file is
loaded.  --debug-init does not produce a backtrace.  Somehow abbrev-mode
and desktop-save-mode are activated without my init file (can someone
explain this to me?).

If Emacs crashed, and you have the Emacs process in the gdb debugger,
please include the output from the following gdb commands:
    `bt full' and `xbacktrace'.
If you would like to further debug the crash, please read the file
/usr/share/emacs/23.0.60/etc/DEBUG for instructions.
