Most people don't need to study or modify the software they run either.
They will benefit from those who actually can and do so, though.

That doing that change is not trivial for most people is obvious.  But
most people also don't write their own compiler!

It's enough if there is one person writing a compiler.

It's enough if there is one person providing a patch to run non-free
extensions.
