I still can't reproduce it.  C-u C-x = shows exactly the
same output as yours (except for that $(D)N(B is shown
correctly).

By the way, in step 3, do you really see 3 spaces between
"Gr" and "Gott"?  Aren't there any other vanishing
characters?
