I have no idea. I hadn't noticed this variable (apparently added in
Emacs22) yet. It is marked with a * so it looks it is meant to be
settable via M-x set-variable. Sounds like a defcustom wouldn't hurt.

Sounds reasonable. Could be added to the :options even.
